There is no question that Game of Thrones upped the notch of the game with both the scope and the scale, setting the bar high of what a fantasy series should be on television, but it seems that a challenger has accepted the dare with new reports hinting that upcoming TV series of The Lord of The Rings by Amazon Studios raises the bar even higher with the cost of the series.
As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, the new series of The Lord of The Rings is expected to cost a staggering $500 million for a number of seasons making it a record-breaking series of being the largest one ever made. The debut season reportedly turns the heat of the game up with the production costing $465 million.
As told by the Minister for Economic Development and Tourism of New Zealand, Stuart Nash to Morning Report, "what I can tell you is Amazon is going to spend about $650 million in season one alone. This is fantastic, it really is ... this will be the largest television series ever made."
Reports go around that Amazon commits to have five seasons of The Lord of The Rings to be filmed in New Zealand, not to mention that spin-off series could also happen. The original trilogy of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit were all filmed in the same country.
Comparing it to the game-changer Game of Thrones with a production cost of $100 million, the margin of difference proves to be too big of a cost. Game of Thrones' production cost fluctuates throughout the series with the episode count changing and the battles increasing. It started with almost $6 million for season one which eventually became approximately $15 million every episode in season eight.
With The Lord of the Rings TV series entering the game, it seems to bring in a change, one that could really challenge what Game of Thrones has established.

Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Amazon Studios brings into the television scene the legends of the Middle Earth in the Second Age, taking the viewers back to the kingdom of glory falling into ruins and testing heroes to their edge. It's the return to the depths of Misty Mountains, to the beauty of Lindon forests, to Númenor's kingdom on a captivating island, and to the various places on the map.
The Lord of The Rings TV Series of Amazon brings an ensemble of the star-studded casts with Robert Aramayo, Nazanin Boniadi, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Tom Budge, Owain Arthur, Joseph Mawle, and more. Showrunners of the series are J.D. Payne. And Patrick McKay.
The Lord of The Rings is expected to debut in late 2021.
