Amazon Kickstarting Tomb Raider Universe in Major Movie Deal

With the cancellation of the plans for a sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider film that starred Alicia Vikander, fans have been wondering whether the beloved video game property will get another shot at making another movie adaptation, especially now that video games have become the hottest commodity in Hollywood.

Just several months after MGM lost the film rights, the property has fortunately found a new cinematic home. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon and dj2 Entertainment are teaming up as they have nabbed the film rights to Tomb Raider. A new film adaptation is now currently in the works in the studio.

In addition, they are planning to build a Tomb Raider universe where the video games, TV shows, and movies are all interconnected similar to the MCU. Amazon is fully committed to the property as the report indicated that it is one of their largest deals following Lord of the Rings.

However, while Amazon is also working on a Tomb Raider series with Emmy winner and fan of the video game Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached to the project, the Emmy winner is currently not involved in the development of the film project and video games that are part of the interconnected universe.

With video game properties becoming hot commodities around Hollywood and the studio also committed to several projects that are based on video games, it's not surprising that Amazon is eager to make a Tomb Raider interconnected universe that has the potential to be a huge hit.

It would be interesting to see how the new film project will all come together and which key creatives will they recruit for the third big-screen attempt on the beloved video game property as well as who they will cast to play Lara Croft in this iteration.
