The Alicia Vikander-starred Tomb Raider reboot was a huge success when it was released back in 2018. As a result, a sequel was in development afterward with the actress returning. Unfortunately, MGM failed to green-light the project in time before the rights expired and it was effectively canceled.

Almost a year after the project was canceled, Vikander finally addressed the situation in a recent interview with Variety where she expressed her disappointment as well as her hope that she will get another opportunity to play the role.

"I mean, I thought we were very much [good to go]; we had a director and writer. But yeah, for me, that was another one of those childhood dreams — to portray an action character was awesome, and beyond what I ever thought I would do," she said.

"And I think the physical part is something that I really enjoyed. So, yeah, if another opportunity like that came again, I’ll be interested."

You can tell from Vikander's comments that she was really devastated when she learned the news that she won't be able to reprise her role any more, especially with the love that she has for portraying one of the most iconic video game characters of all time in live-action.

Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green was attached to write and direct the film before the project was canceled although there are no details regarding what the story of the sequel would have been about.

After the rights for the Tomb Raider franchise lapsed on MGM, a bidding war eventually occurred with Amazon eventually nabbing the IP and developing multiple projects surrounding the property.

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is currently attached to write a TV series based on the Tomb Raider games although it remains to be seen yet whether she will be starring in the project as well.

The studio is also developing another feature film with plans of potentially doing a shared universe similar to most franchises nowadays. The development is still in the early stages as of this moment.

It is pretty clear at this point that the Tomb Raider franchise is moving forward with a fresher take and a studio that is also behind some of the beloved IPs in entertainment. We should be hearing more news and updates about the development of the projects in the coming months.
