Alicia Vikander Drops Hopeful Tomb Raider Sequel Update

Most people may have forgotten that the Tomb Raider reboot is supposed to be getting a sequel. However, one person who didn't forget is Alicia Vikander, who has just shared a hopeful update on the tentatively titled Tomb Raider: Obsidian.

The Tomb Raider sequel was initially set to begin production back in 2019 but needed to be pushed back due to COVID-19. Since then, Misha Green has taken over the project as its writer and director and the Lovecraft Country showrunner has even gone as far as sharing the movie's unofficial title.

So how far has the project gone into development? Vikander has told Collider that things would be better if they had started working on it before the pandemic. Nevertheless, she is eager to continue with Lara Croft's story.

"Pre-COVID, I would've said yes. And now I think it's a yes still. It's not greenlit, but the script is in the making, and I think everyone is excited and I would love to revisit Lara again," Vikander said. She then shared that Green is hard at work on the screenplay.

"It's very recent. It's really now when the world is up and running again [that the script is being written], and Misha is onboard and she's working on the script right now," Vikander said. "So I'm very excited to sort of read something very soon."

It's great to know that Vikander is already preparing to return as Lara although the new movie has not yet been greenlit. There is a possibility that the studio is still waiting for another draft of the Tomb Raider: Obsidian script before making an official announcement.

There is little doubt that things will be different with the second Tomb Raider film now that Green is involved. We're hoping that we will be getting an official update on the project before the end of the year.

Tomb Raider: Obsidian has not yet been given an official production start date nor an official release date. In addition to that, Vikander and Green are the only names attached to the project for now. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
