Akira Toriyama Explains Dragon Ball's Super Saiyans

Akira Toriyama, the acclaimed creator of Dragon Ball, has revealed the secrets of turning into a Super Saiyan and it is going to get a mixed reaction. Toriyama's known as an eclectic writer, often writing on the go and making big changes whenever he feels like it. With all that in mind, the following revelation might not sound too surprising, but it does lessen the impact of the transformations we have witnessed for the past few years.

Thanks to translations from Herms98, we now know that S-Cells are required to turn into the legendary form. Yup, it's not anger or emotional trauma that lead to Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan reaching these forms, it is the S-Cells in their body. No, this isn't George Lucas writing Dragon Ball, it's a fan-favorite writer revealing something very disappointing.

For those wondering about the Lucas reference, the Star Wars director made the controversial decision to introduce midi-chlorians to the popular fantasy franchise. These were microscopic living beings that live inside certain people and allowed them to use the force. It's pretty dumb and the S-Cells aren't any better, to be honest.

This does explain how Goten and Trunks were able to turn into Super Saiyans easily. I'm not sure if this makes their transformation better or worse, but at least it makes some sense now.

Dragon Ball Super can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
