Quinta Brunson's comedy series, which premiered in December to excellent reviews and virtually instant success, has been a huge smash for ABC. So it's hardly shocking that Abbott Elementary Season 2 was announced before the first season ended.
Brunson plays Janine Teagues, a teacher at a Philadelphia public school with few resources, where she collaborates with other dedicated educators and an inept principal. Since its premiere, audiences have praised the show for its wit and for spotlighting the realities of teachers and students around the world.

Abbott Elementary Season 2 - Where the story left off in Season 1
Janine became single again after the first season of Abbott Elementary ended in April. Tariq expected Janine to join him when he was offered a possibly career-changing opportunity to fly to New York and work on music. But she was torn about going. In the end, she opted to stay in Pennsylvania and take a "break" from their relationship.
At the same time, she was finally catching on to Gregory Eddie's desire to her, only to discover that he had recently begun dating Taylor Howard, Barbara Howard's daughter. Fans are ready for them to just be together, but there will be more of them next season. Especially now that Greg has joined the Abbott Elementary faculty full-time.
Abbott Elementary Season 2 could feature life outside the classroom
Brunson told ELLE that she would like to go more into what happens outside of Abbott Elementary in addition to learning more about their professional lives. She told Deadline that she didn't do it in Season 1 because she "wanted the audience to fall in love with our school," but now that that's done, she's ready to follow the teachers home and focus on who they are outside of work.
“This season, now we get to go maybe to some of the character’s houses, go out with them at night and stuff like that,” she shared. “And I’m just pumped about that because that’s really exciting for us as writers to venture out with our characters. And I just know our writers from the first season were like, ‘Oh, we want to leave sometimes.’ But I was like, ‘We just got to stay here though. Just for the first season.'”
In terms of the cast, no information has been released. However, judging by where the episode left everyone, fans should expect to see the main cast return. (Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, and Chris Perfetti.) The only character whose destiny is truly unknown in Abbott Elementary Season 2 is Zack Fox (Tariq), owing to his character's breakup with Janine. However, it is possible that he will return as well.
Abbott Elementary Season 2 release date
When Abbott Elementary returns to ABC, fans will be able to see what happens for themselves. Abbott Elementary Season 2 is set to premiere on Sept. 21, just in time for the new school year, according to a June announcement. From here on out, the show will air on Wednesdays and will be accessible to watch on Hulu the following day.
