8 Best Moments From Game Of Thrones Season 7

Season 7 of HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones has come and gone, and although winter is finally here, it looks like we’ll have to wait until 2019 to find out the repercussions of what’s been one of the most eventful seasons to date. Still, that doesn’t mean we can’t reminisce about our favorite moments from Season 7 to try and pass some of the time.

If you’re not fully up to date on Season 7 yet, you’d best turn around now, because this article contains massive spoilers. If you are up to date, then saddle up, grab your dragonglass daggers, and prepare to relive the 8 best moments from Game of Thrones Season 7:

  1. Daenerys Returns To Dragonstone

As Season 6 came to a close, we witnessed Daenerys set sail for Westeros, accompanied by the countless allies she had amassed over the years. Finally, after a lifetime of waiting, the Mother of Dragons was ready to take the first major step in reclaiming the throne her family had held for centuries. It’s incredibly satisfying to see Daenerys kneel down and touch the ground of Westeros for the first time since her birth, but perhaps more noteworthy is her reaction when she gazes upon the volcanic rock-forged throne of her Targaryen ancestors. Rather than sitting upon the throne, she walks right by it and enters the Chamber of the Painted Table, showing us that her eyes are firmly fixated on the larger task at hand. It’s a powerful scene, and it’s brilliantly capped off by Daenerys turning to Tyrion and asking him, “Shall we begin?”

  2. Olenna’s Last Stand

Olenna Tyrell has always been one of the most intriguing characters on Game of Thrones. Her wit, cunning, and mastery of politics make it easy to liken her to Littlefinger, but unlike him, she’s the type of character you actually want to see succeed. That’s what makes her death all the more disheartening, but even as she’s about to meet her maker, Olenna still manages to get the last laugh. After the Lannister forces swiftly take Highgarden, we see a meeting between Jaime and Olenna, which the latter is certain will end with her death. Thankfully, Jaime was able to talk Cersei into giving the eldest and last remaining Tyrell a merciful death by way of a fast-acting poison. After drinking her poison-tainted wine, Olenna recalls Joffrey’s similar demise at the Purple Wedding, describing in great detail what he looked like as he choked to death. Then, in her final moment, Olenna urges Jaime to tell Cersei that she was responsible for her son’s death.

  3. Jon And Daenerys Finally Meet

Over the course of six full seasons, we’ve come to know and love Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, but until Season 7, the two fan-favorites had yet to ever interact with one another. When they finally meet, it’s the ultimate payoff for viewers, but unfortunately for Jon and Daenerys, the encounter leaves much to be desired. Each needs the other’s help, but their conflicting agendas immediately put the pair at odds. And while Daenerys eventually agrees to allow Jon to mine the dragonglass beneath Dragonstone, it would still take some time before the two ended up on the same page.

  4. Euron’s Attack

Until Season 6, Euron Greyjoy’s presence had yet to be felt in Game of Thrones, but since returning to the Iron Islands, he’s certainly been hell-bent on making up for lost time. This is perhaps most evident when Euron attempts to make good on his promise to deliver a gift to his intended bride-to-be, Cersei Lannister, which – as we soon find out – comes in the form of Ellaria and Tyene, whom Cersei holds responsible for the death of her daughter Myrcella. The bloody attack proves just how savage Euron and his forces can be, as they storm Yara’s fleet after setting it on fire and lay waste to Daenerys’ allies in devastatingly quick and brutal fashion, all for the sake of winning the heart of the equally-sadistic Cersei.

  5. The Death Of Viserion

In “Beyond the Wall,” we see Daenerys suffer her biggest loss since Khal Drogo in Season 1, with results that significantly increase the threat posed by the already-deadly White Walkers. Jon Snow and his ragtag band of misfits attempt to capture a wight, but quickly find themselves surrounded by the White Walkers and their entire Army of the Dead. The numbers game naturally catches up with them, but Daenerys and her dragons are able to make the save; all except for Viserion, who’s struck with one of the Night King’s ice spears, piercing his neck and sending him plunging into the frozen lake. The reaction of not just Daenerys, but of Drogon and Rhaegal, who cry out for their fallen brother, make this moment all the more heartbreaking, but nevertheless, it serves to show that the Night King knows exactly how to level the playing field when the odds are seemingly stacked against him.

  6. The Loot Train Battle

The look on Jaime’s face when he first catches glimpse of Daenerys riding on the back of Drogon says everything there is to say about this moment. The Lannister army was ill-equipped to deal with the Dothraki soldiers, let alone a massive, fire-breathing dragon, and despite Bronn’s best efforts to use the Scorpion to take Drogon down, the might of Daenerys’ 100,000-strong army is simply too much for Jaime’s troops to handle. Whether it’s by the sickles of the Dothraki riders or by Drogon’s fiery breath, the Lannister army is unequivocally decimated. It’s a fight that elicits a number of mixed feelings (let’s face it, Jaime’s far too compelling for us to want to see him die), and this internal conflict is perfectly embodied by Tyrion, who watches the melee from a safe distance while quietly encouraging his brother to retreat and live to fight another day.

  7. The Death Of Littlefinger

While Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish’s allegiances and motives have always been questionable, more often than not, they tended to err on the side of sinister. In fact, for the majority of Season 7, we saw him attempt to turn Sansa and Arya against each other, but unfortunately for the brothel owner-turned-Lord Protector of the Vale, he gravely underestimated the tenacity of the remaining Starks. With everyone gathered in Winterfell’s Great Hall, Sansa recounts a laundry list of crimes committed against House Stark, but to Littlefinger’s surprise, it turns out that Arya isn’t the one on trial – he is. From orchestrating the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters to convincing Lysa Arryn to kill her former husband to killing Lysa, herself, this moment served as a great reminder to fans of just how much of monster Littlefinger is, which makes it all the more satisfying when Arya slits his throat with the very same dagger that was given to the Catspaw assassin to kill Bran.

  8. The Wall Comes Crumbling Down

Standing at 700 feet tall and stretching for 300 miles along the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms, the Wall has long been the ultimate line of defense in protecting the realm from wildling invaders, and more importantly, White Walkers. However, in the Season 7 finale, the Night King manages to make short work of the eight-millennia-old fortification thanks to the newest addition to his army. It all begins when we meet up with Tormund Gianstbane, Beric Dondarrion, and various others as they spot a White Walker emerging from the forest, with his brethren and the entire Army of the Dead close behind him. And as if this wasn’t bad enough, the moment that was foreshadowed in the penultimate episode finally comes to fruition as we see the Night King enter the fray, perched triumphantly on the back of the undead Viserion, whose deadly blue flames turn the frozen fortress into nothing more than a pile of ice cubes.
