5 Things We Don't Want to See in Captain Marvel

After years of anticipation, the first solo outing for Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will finally take flight when Captain Marvel soars into theaters across the nation next March. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first female-led movie, this is a film that’s long overdue, so naturally, the stakes are high.

Nevertheless, while fans have been waiting to see Carol Danvers on the big screen for years, there are certainly things they don’t want accompanying her. That being said, here are five things we don’t want to see in Captain Marvel:

  1. Carol as Ms. Marvel

Since her debut in March 1968, Carol Danvers has gone through countless evolutions in terms of her characterization, her power set, her appearance, and even her name. However, just because Captain Marvel will be the first time we see her on the big screen doesn’t mean we need to take any unnecessary steps backward. There’s more than enough ground to cover in this one film, so it’s best to forego Carol’s Ms. Marvel tenure and jump straight into her evolution into Captain Marvel proper. That’s not to say there shouldn’t be any Easter eggs, such as a shot of the classic Ms. Marvel costume in a display case, but as far as the narrative goes, it’s best to keep things as succinct as possible.

  2. A Throwaway Villain

For all that Marvel Studios has done right over the past decade, forgettable, throwaway villains remains a point of contention amongst fans. To be honest, the fact that, 20 movies in, you can count the number of memorable antagonists one on hand is laughable. Hopefully, Captain Marvel will prove to be an exception to the rule, and if the popular theory that Jude Law’s Mar-Vell is the big bad is to be believed, we should be in for a treat. If not, though, let’s just hope the studio has learned its lesson and gives us a villain that’s truly worthy of such an iconic hero.

  3. A Distracting Cameo

At this point in time, we have no reason to believe Captain Marvel will feature cameo appearances by any of the core Avengers. However, with the film taking place in the 1990s, it’s hardly outside the realm of possibilities that a digitally de-aged Tony Stark (pre-Iron Man, of course) could show up, if only for a moment. On the one hand, that would certainly be a fun and clever way to build more connective tissue, but with this being the first female-led solo film in the MCU, it’d be far more rewarding to let this truly be Carol’s movie, without any distracting cameos. Besides, we’re already getting Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, which is more than enough familiar faces for a standalone film.

  4. Skrull Fever

The shape-shifting aliens known as the Skrulls, when used correctly, can be incredibly entertaining. However, as we saw with Secret Invasion, things can get out of hand rather quickly. Fans are already wracking their brains over something as trivial as what the title of Avengers 4 is going to be, and the last thing we need is Marvel opening the floodgates by establishing that perhaps a number of characters in the present-day MCU could have been replaced by Skrulls. Including the Skrulls in Captain Marvel is a great way to establish their presence in the MCU, but they’re a threat that should be neutralized in the film and then placed on the backburner.

  5. Overplaying the ‘90s Nostalgia

When the first Captain Marvel trailer dropped, we saw Carol crash through the roof of a Blockbuster store, firmly establishing the fact that this film takes place in the 1990s. And you know what? That’s all we really need. The ‘90s holds a special place in the hearts of many, so it’s easy to see how Marvel could be tempted to overplay that nostalgia, but too many ham-fisted winks and nods would ultimately prove to be distracting and potentially annoying. Establish that the events of the film take place in the ‘90s and then move on – we don’t need to be reminded throughout the story.
