5 Reasons Why Marvel Studios Hasn’t Released The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer Yet

Back in July, those lucky enough to be in attendance at either Disney’s annual D23 Expo or Hall H at Comic-Con International in San Diego were treated to their first glimpse of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious and anticipated endeavor to date – Avengers: Infinity War. And while those of us too eager to wait can easily scour the web for the leaked cell phone footage, the majority of fans won’t be satisfied until they get to see the real deal.

Given the fact that the footage clearly exists and fans are clamoring for it, why is Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co. remaining so tight-lipped? Well, we here at Epicstream have some thoughts. Here are 5 reasons why Marvel Studios hasn’t released the Avengers: Infinity War trailer yet:

  1. It’s Still Being Polished

We’ll kick things off with the corporate-approved answer before we begin speculation. Obviously, Marvel doesn’t want to release anything that’s not up to the studio’s incredibly high visual and technical standards (unless you count Inhumans), so it makes sense that Feige wouldn’t want to make the footage available for mass consumption (and scrutiny) until it’s absolutely perfect. In fact, in a recent Twitter post, Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito went on the record to address the trailer, telling fans, “All I can say is that I love it and I hope all you feel the same. It's currently being finished so it's not ready yet.”

D’Esposito’s sentiments seem to mirror those of Infinity War co-director Joe Russo, who said this past July that the footage released at SDCC and D23 was intended for a specific audience. “You know, all I can say is that when the footage comes out we want it to be exactly right,” Russo told ComicBook.com. “So we are taking our time and working on that footage because, as you can imagine, the levels of visual effects in these movies are unprecedented and there are certain things in this footage at Comic-Con that works specifically for a Comic-Con audience. But when we go wide, to a wide audience, we have to make sure that footage works for a wide audience. So we're hard at work on that right now. I'm not going to give a timeline on it because I want to surprise people but, you know, hopefully, they're patient with us.”

  2. They’re Waiting For Thor: Ragnarok To Run Its Course

This section of the list contains spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok, so if you haven’t seen it yet, skip to the next entry.

Thor: Ragnarok is now in theaters worldwide, and perhaps one of the biggest shocks of the Taika Waititi-directed blockbuster is that the God of Thunder loses one of his eyes in his climactic battle with Hela. Even more surprising, though, is the fact that by the time the film comes to a close, it isn’t undone by Asgardian magic, replaced with some sort of prosthetic, etc. – instead, Thor is seen sporting an eyepatch reminiscent of the one worn by his late father Odin.

Marvel clearly went to great lengths to hide this significant turn of events in the trailers, going as far as to show Thor with both eyes in scenes where we now know he only has one. That being said, perhaps the reason Marvel hasn’t released the Infinity War trailer yet is that the studio doesn’t want to potentially spoil Thor: Ragnarok so soon into its theatrical run by showing footage in which the God of Thunder is missing an eye. After all, from the description of the footage shown as D23 and SDCC, the opening scene has Thor crashing face first into the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship.

By all accounts, Thor had both eyes in that footage, but the studio will surely fix that in the official trailer to avoid confusion and maintain continuity. However, it would surely raise some questions for those who haven’t made it to the theaters to see Ragnarok yet if they saw Thor with an eyepatch, so it’s hardly outside the realm of possibility that Marvel’s simply waiting for the film to finish its theatrical run.

  3. They’re Waiting For Thanksgiving/Christmas

The holiday season is nearly upon us. That means friends and family will gather together to enjoy great food, exchange gifts, and – let’s face it – probably stare at their phones for hours on end. With that many eyes glued to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all at once, what better time is there to drop one of the most anticipated superhero movie trailers of all time? If Marvel Studios truly wants the Infinity War trailer to go viral, then perhaps they’re just waiting until as many eyes are fixated on their mobile devices as possible.

  4. They’re Waiting For Black Panther

As incredible as Marvel’s next cinematic spectacle looks, you’d be lying if you said that Black Panther is a household name, even after Chadwick Boseman’s show-stealing performance in Captain America: Civil War. Couple that with a February release date and you’re looking at a film that could use as much hype behind it as possible. That being said, perhaps Marvel is simply keeping the Infinity War trailer in its back pocket so the studio has an ace in the hole to get more butts into the theaters to see Black Panther.

Of course, none of this is to say that Black Panther won’t do well on its own merit, but there are certainly some factors working against it, much like Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. Yes, those films ended up being successful (Guardians, especially), but you never know how general audiences will respond to a character they know little to nothing about. For those on the fence, the added value of getting an exclusive look at Avengers: Infinity War could be the deciding factor, so that might be what Marvel’s waiting for.

  5. They’re Waiting For The Last Jedi

Once again, Marvel Studios is going to want to get as many eyes on the Infinity War trailer as possible. To do that, do you think they could be waiting for the release of what’s likely the biggest film of 2017, Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Both Marvel and Lucasfilm are owned by Disney, so it makes sense that Marvel would take advantage of that relationship in such a manner. If we here at Epicstream had to place our own bets, our money is on the Infinity War trailer premiering ahead of The Last Jedi, which is why Marvel hasn’t released it yet.
