The full 1899 trailer introduces the next mysterious horror series from the makers of Dark.
The 1899 series, which centers on a group of immigrants leaving London to start new lives in New York City, is another genre-bending effort by Dark co-creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. Although it is known that the trip eventually turns into a nightmare, Netflix has mostly kept narrative details a secret.
A previous 1899 teaser featured a lot of menacing imagery, and a poster created a similarly unsettling atmosphere. A fresh sneak peek at the upcoming mystery lifts the veil and gives viewers a better idea of what to expect.
The full 1899 trailer has been released by Netflix ahead of the show's premiere on Nov. 17.
1899 Trailer Shares Glimpse Of What's to Come
The trailer begins with a message from the abandoned Prometheus arriving on the immigrants' ship. The passengers are quickly arguing what, if anything, they should do in response to the incoming message.
Of course, as with Dark, the case is far from straightforward, and there are numerous clues that something more nefarious is at work.
Dark rapidly received critical praise and a devoted following after its debut in 2017. The series, which began by following residents in a fictional German community following the disappearance of a kid, earned praise for its tone and visual storytelling.
The ambitious plots of the German series spawned a thriving online community ready to comb through the numerous aspects and nuances linked with the sci-fi thriller.
1899 Expectations
It is clear that 1899 will be focused on an immigrant ship that is sailing from Europe to New York, even though the entire direction of the story is still mostly unknown. The story of 1899, which takes place at the very end of the 19th century, will include a wide cast of individuals from many social groups and racial backgrounds.
But as soon as the travelers see the oddly deserted Prometheus, those distinctions dissolve. This marks the start of strange events that ripple through the ship like a curse.
It remains to be seen whether 1899 will have the same cultural cache when it debuts in a few weeks, but the sense of mystery and ambiguity is unmistakable.
